Living with Alligators: Safety Tips for Our Community Lakes & Canals

UPDATE (10/23/2025): Another alligator was spotted in our community lakes between SW 91st and SW 93rd Ave. The Fish & Wild Life Trappers have been out a few times this month trying to capture the gator. The trapper was out again today to no avail. Please continue to be vigilant walking with your children or small animals along the lakes. Please read the safety recommendations listed below.

We would like to mention that two alligators have been spotted in our neighborhood and would like to take this opportunity to speak about alligator safety. Our community lakes are home to alligators, an essential part of our ecosystem.

To ensure safety while enjoying these natural areas, here are some important tips:

Safety Tips

1. Keep a Distance: Never approach or feed alligators. They can become dangerous if they lose their natural fear of humans.

2. Avoid Swimming: Especially at night, when alligators are most active.

3. Protect Pets: Keep pets on a leash and away from the water's edge.

4. Be Aware: Stay alert near the water and look for signs of alligator activity.

5. Secure Your Yard: Install barriers to keep alligators out if you live near a lake.

6. Educate Your Family: Teach children about alligator safety and the importance of staying away from the water.

Encountering an Alligator

If you see an alligator, back away slowly and avoid running in a straight line. Make loud noises to scare it off if it approaches.

Reporting

Report any sightings to local wildlife authorities for proper handling. The Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission (FWC) has a Hotline for reporting nuisance alligators and alligator sightings. That number is 1-866-392-4286. Any resident who sees an alligator, should call the FWC Hotline number and provide as much information as possible on the time and location of the sighting.
